This project is situated within Karai Ward, Kiambu County which sits within the larger Nairobi Metropolis. Located approximately 25 km from Nairobi’s city centre, the area has a large network of roads and will soon benefit from increasing population growth and trade, due to a new southern by-pass road.
In partnership with the NACHU, 37 houses were built incrementally, with a starter core unit comprising of 2 rooms and opportunity to extend. Household water and sanitation were included, and units were constructed within plot sizes of 23 square metres.
The houses were affordable for households with average monthly income levels of just USD $200 and in total 137 clients benefitted, the majority of whom were small-scale business traders and taxi drivers that were previously renting in informal settlements. They were able to purchase the properties with micro mortgage loans that were provided by NACHU, to be repaid within 7 years.
Clients estimated to sit between 11th and 20th percentiles of incomes in Nairobi
