Located in Khokana, which sits within the Lalitpur district of Kathmandu Valley this project targeted members of the Khokana Cooperative. The project is fully financed through revolved funds from previous Lumanti projects, which is a great example of how housing finance can be used cyclically to have greater impact. The Cooperative has been lent funds by Lumanti, which then finances the allocation of individual housing loans to member households. Upon repaying their loan to the cooperative, the funds will be revolved again by Lumanti to support new housing projects throughout Nepal.
Khokana received significant damage from the 2015 earthquake, which displaced 2.8 million people, causing many families to lose their homes. As part of the project the community will be trained in housing and infrastructure construction, and given technical, financial and management skills, allowing each household to construct a safe, permanent house fully serviced with electricity, household water and sanitation.
